Reflections...

taken at the Marina at Ontario Place, August 27, 2011

this is the last day of the August Break and it's been enjoyable thinking about posts around photographs, speaking more with visuals and less with words.  But I must admit, I am looking forward to getting back into the swing of regular blogging.

The Sweet Life...

If you remember the piece I was working on here, you will see when you look at this completed canvas that I went in a completely different direction.  Much as I liked what I had started, there was no way to "finish" it that made me happy.  So I kept adding layers and pieces and bits until I was satisfied with the outcome.  Art is interesting in this way -- we start with one idea and as the muse continues to prod, we often end up doing something that bears no resemblance to the original idea.  This is now for sale in my etsy shop.

Glads for the Memories....

Gladiolus were my mother's favourite flower.  I sometimes find it hard to believe that it's been 14 years since she passed away.  It seems like only yesterday we were chatting and laughing on the phone.  She'd begin nearly every phone conversation with me by saying "What are you doing now Laura?".  It was a joke that started when I was much younger.  From the Dick Van Dyke Show, a line from Laura Petrie's neighbour Millie ... both women were nervous and afraid, of what I can no longer remember, but we laughed so much about that and how Millie said those words to Laura over the phone, and it became "our thing".  Sometimes when I answer the telephone, even with call display and knowing who is on the other end, I still half expect to hear the person say "what are you doing now Laura?".  I miss you mom and I'd love to tell you what I'm doing now.

Canvas of Love...

click on the photo to see more of the detail

This is the piece of art I created for my friend Kathy -- she received it yesterday and I am so pleased that she loves it.  Truly a work of art from the heart.  The dress and shoes graphics were purchased from artist Joanna Pierotti at Mosshill Studio and were chosen especially for Kathy who has a deep love of old things, of antiques and things from the past.

Sneak Peek...

Colour and texture and layering...this is part of the canvas that I made for my friend Kathy, in exchange for the art she sent to me.  It's on the way to her now and when it has been received, I will share the entire piece.  The "bit o' Yorkshire" that is showing through the paint and ink represents a bit of me I am sending...my paternal grandfather came here from Yorkshire.

Unfolding and Unfurling...

Anemone

(ə-nĕm'ə-nē) Any of various perennial herbs of the genus Anemone, native chiefly to northern temperate regions and having palmately lobed leaves and large flowers with showy sepals. Also called windflower.

When I was a little girl, I thought this flower was pronounced "anymoney"... I love how it's pronounced either way...my "old" way or the proper way.  However you pronounce it, watching this beautiful flower unfurl is a delight.
