Gladiolus were my mother's favourite flower. I sometimes find it hard to believe that it's been 14 years since she passed away. It seems like only yesterday we were chatting and laughing on the phone. She'd begin nearly every phone conversation with me by saying "What are you doing now Laura?". It was a joke that started when I was much younger. From the
Dick Van Dyke Show, a line from Laura Petrie's neighbour Millie ... both women were nervous and afraid, of what I can no longer remember, but we laughed so much about that and how Millie said those words to Laura over the phone, and it became "our thing". Sometimes when I answer the telephone, even with call display and knowing who is on the other end, I still half expect to hear the person say "what are you doing now Laura?". I miss you mom and I'd love to tell you what I'm doing now.
